Fire Safety - 7 tips that can save a life

1.       Remain calm. When an alarm is triggered, the bells will continue to ring

2.       The Ontario Fire Marshall employs a Stay or Go policy for occupants when a firm alarm has been triggered

a.       If you go:

     i.      Close your windows/balcony doors

ii.      Before you open your suite door, place the back of hand to back of door to ensure it is not hot (indicating a potential danger in the hallway)

iii.      Check the peephole to ensure the area is clear of smoke or other dangers

iv.      Know your primary & secondary exit stairwells

     v.      Know where to go by travelling each stairwell from your unit

b.       If you stay:

       i.      Close your windows & balcony doors

ii.      Ensure your area is free of smoke, place a towel at the base of your suite door

iii.      If available, use your terrace of balcony if the conditions are clear of danger such as smoke or fire

iv.      Listen for instructions from the Fire Department

  v.      Do not congregate in the hallways

3.       Occupants should keep management apprised of any special needs or consideration (such as mobility, hearing, etc.,) to assist the Fire Department

4.       Monthly & annual testing of the fire system is required by law. Notices should be posted and distributed prior to these events. If you hear an alarm and are unsure if there is an active test occurring, you may contact the management office or the Local Fire Department.

5.       Pull stations are located by every exit stairwell. Do not hesitate to engage the pull station. Every second can save a life. Do not assume that someone else will notify the Fire Department. If you have never pulled a pull station, doing so during a fire drill will provide great comfort in knowing how to engage a pull station.

6.       Do not use the elevator. If your building is equipped with an elevator, the fire department will rely on the elevator to assist in their duties, if the conditions are safe.

7.       Each building will have a Fire Safety Plan. Ensure you have a copy by contacting your property manager.

By revisiting these seven steps on a regular basis, if an event were to take place at your building, you will be equipped to make smart decisions to help you and others.
